When does the certificate for a safety officer expire?

The training certificate for supervisors is valid for 5 years from the date of completion of the course. This obligation was introduced by Conversion Law No. 215/2021 of Decree-Law No. 146/2021, which amended Article 37 of Legislative Decree No. 81/2008, establishing that the training activities for safety officers must be repeated every five years.

It is important to note that if the certificate is not updated within the prescribed time limits, it loses its validity, exposing the employer and the supervisor to possible sanctions. Therefore, it is essential to monitor deadlines and to schedule timely refresher courses for supervisors to ensure compliance with current occupational health and safety regulations.

How many hours does the refresher course for the person in charge provide for?

The refresher course for the person in charge, established by Legislative Decree 81/2008 and the recent amendment by Law Decree no. 146/2021 (converted into Law no. 215/2021), provides for 8 hours of compulsory training. 6 hours This update serves to keep the supervisor's knowledge in line with regulatory and operational changes in occupational safety. This is what our refresher course for supervisors includes:

  1. Main actors involved and their obligations. This module illustrates the main figures in the field of safety at work. The role of each is analysed, with a specific focus on the obligations and responsibilities of the person in charge, who has the task of supervising and monitoring the application of safety measures.
  2. Definition and identification of risk factors. This part deals with the various risk factors present in the workplace. The course will guide the supervisor to recognise specific risks, which may include physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic and psychosocial risks. The aim is to provide tools to identify dangerous situations at an early stage and prevent accidents or damage to health.
  3. Risk assessment. This section focuses on the methodology of risk assessment, a fundamental process for company safety. The supervisor learns how to participate in risk assessment, estimating the probability and severity of hazards, in order to determine priorities for action.
  4. Identification of technical, organisational and procedural prevention and protection measures. Finally, the course explores the various prevention and protection measures to be taken to reduce or eliminate risks. Technical measures include the use of appropriate safety devices and equipment; organisational measures concern the management of resources and procedures to avoid risk situations; procedural measures include specific instructions and practices that workers must follow to maintain a safe environment.

A test is scheduled at the end of the training course to verify the knowledge acquired. The final examination will be open to all trainees who have attended at least 90 per cent of the teaching hours. If the examination is passed successfully, the student will receive a certificate of attendance valid throughout the country.
