Who is the E.N.R. for?
The R.E.N.T.RI (National Electronic Register for Waste Traceability) is a digital system used to trace the path of waste, from production to disposal or recovery. It replaces the old SISTRI and requires all companies, except those that do not process hazardous waste and have fewer than ten employees, to join.

The RENTRI (acronym for National Electronic Register for Waste Traceability) is a digital system set up by the Italian Ministry of the Environment to ensure more efficient, transparent and controlled waste management.
It was created with the aim of digitising processes relating to the production, transport and disposal of waste, progressively replacing traditional paper documentation such as forms and registers. How does RENTRI work?
In practical terms, the system requires certain categories of entities to register on the portal and manage their loading and unloading register and waste identification forms (FIR) electronically.
The RENTRI portal provides digital tools for compiling and storing documents, as well as automatic control, digital signature and data transmission functions. Each waste loading and unloading operation must be registered within a set deadline, with the possibility of automatic integration between company management software and the platform.
RENTRI registration: who has to register and how to proceed
Current legislation establishes the obligation to register with RENTRI for specific categories of entities involved in waste management. Interested companies must register with the national electronic waste traceability register through the official website of the Ministry of the Environment or through accredited portals. It is also possible to delegate the management of the RENTRI to consultants or authorised third parties.
But who are the subjects obliged to RENTRI? According to the regulations, they must register:
- Initial producers of hazardous waste.
- Companies and entities that generate non-hazardous waste from industrial and artisanal processing with more than ten employees.
- Waste transporters; recovery and disposal facilities.
- Waste traders and brokers.
The main objective of RENTRI is to ensure traceability and transparency throughout all phases of waste management, from its production to its final destination, promoting a more efficient and environmentally compliant management.
RENTRI: when the new system comes into force
The entry into force of the RENTRI is staggered by subject categories. The implementing decree provides for a calendar of fulfilments with different deadlines depending on the type of company and the number of employees. The first registrations are already active for some categories, while others will have to comply by 2025.
